HERE’S A BOXFUL OF TIPS FOR PACKING AND STORAGE
Some of us are hoarders (of possessions), some of us aren’t.Even if you’re not a collector, you’re more than likely to make use of a storage facility somewhere along the way.
Whether you’re on the move, uncluttering your home or in a transition phase in your life… whatever your needs, self-storage can be a very practical and convenient way to store your ‘stuff’.
It’s a good idea to invest some time planning your move and storing your things in an organised, disciplined way – you’ll be thankful you did. Here are a few tips to ease the process, and to help you locate something if you need it in a hurry !
SOME GENERAL TIPS
* Newsprint can leave marks on furniture etc, so it’s best to use unprinted paper
* Photograph valuable items for insurance
* Arrange copies of passports, visas, birth certificates etc and keep in a separate place
* When moving house, it’s advisable to pack by room and to keep all the contents of that room as close as possible
• Have a designated ‘necessities’ box which can be unpacked first and which contains vital items such as adapter plugs, screwdriver, remote controls for TVs etc, a set of linen for each bed that will need to be made up on the first night, torch, candle
BOXES
* Boxes should be the same size and should not be too big, as they get too heavy and impossible to move
* Clearly label all boxes. Some people prefer to number the boxes and keep a detailed contents list at another location.Another packing idea from a storage company in Perth is to label the boxes for a particular room in a particular colour eg. yellow labels for kitchen, blue for study etc.
* Add a couple of moth balls or something similar to each box to repel pests
* Seal boxes securely with packing tape
* Ensure labels face outwards !
* Boxes and furniture should be placed on pallets rather than directly onto the concrete floor to prevent moisture absorption
OTHER ITEMS
• Books should be packed flat to prevent damaging their spines
* Avoid storing mirrors, paintings etc flat – they should be on their side to protect the glass
* All batteries should be taken out of appliances, toys etc
* Silver items should be wrapped in non-acid tissue paper to avoid tarnishing
• Wipe all metal, chrome or cast iron surfaces eg bicycles, lawnmowers with a little machine oil to delay rusting
* Drain petrol or other flammable materials, and empty gas bottles
* Fridges and freezers should be cleaned out and completely dry before storing.During storage, the doors should be left slightly ajar
• Clothing and curtains should be hung on hangers if possible
FURNITURE
• Stand sofas and mattresses on their end
* Remove table legs and wrap carefully – and if that’s not possible, store tables upside down.
* Remove the keys from any doors, draws etc. securely to the inside of the item
PACKING THE STORAGE AREA
* Keep a central aisle open to enable easy access
* Items that you may be likely to need should be stored at the front of the unit, easily accessible
* Store valuable items at the back
* Shelving can also be a good idea to create more space
* Put a dust cover made from cotton or a light plastic sheet over everything
Use these tips as a guide for easy packing and storage.Self storage is a very convenient, flexible and easy-to-use way to keep your possessions safe and secure. And more and more people are opting for self storage for both their domestic and commercial requirements say a top supplier of storage units in Perth, EzyStorage.
