Glastonbury Festival 2011, Somerset by Thom Sanders
The end of June sees the biggest event on the musical calendar for Somerset and the surrounding area, the world famous “Glastonbury Festival” at Worthy Farm, Pilton, Near Glastonbury, 25 miles by car and just south of Bath. The Glastonbury Festival is now the largest “Greenfield music and performing arts festival” in the world.
The festival which has been running since 1970 was originally inspired by the “Hippie movement” and the free festival movement during the 1960′s and early 1970′s of the likes of the ever famous American “Woodstock Festival” and England’s “Isle of Wight Festival” in the ’60′s. The farm owner and festival organiser Michael Eavis has been behind the festival in its current form since 1981, but its now a far cry from the music festivals of the past.
There are more stage’s, dedicated marquees which are often music style or genre specific, and then there is the awesome main Pyramid Stage which displays the main headline acts and bands. The Glastonbury Festival 2011 sees another huge line-up of bands and acts performing during the festivals five day duration.
This years’ festival sees U2 headlining and finally (hopefully) making the Glastonbury gig at last! As there were two previous years when U2 had to cancel and were replaced by other headlining acts, so it’s third time lucky for Bono and the band. Other artists and bands which are sure to pull in the fans are; Coldplay, Morrissey, Beyonce, Paolo Nutini, Rumer, The Chemical Brothers and The Coral and many more. From the 80′s there are artists like Big Audio Dynamite & Suzanne Vega and from the 70′s artists including Kool and the Gang and also the sublime Don McLean. One of the old rockers hitting the stage at Glastonbury this year is the legendary Duane Eddy with his unique style of “twangy” guitar playing his hits dating back to the late 50′s.
If you are staying in Bath and you are planning to visit Glastonbury for the music festival for the day or maybe you would like to visit Glastonbury Tor and St. Michael’s Tower” which sits on top of the hill (or “Tor”). Glastonbury Tor is also steeped in speculation about its history and the various settlements that have been established there over the hundreds of years. Archaeologists have found remains dating back to the Neolithic times & the later Iron Age period also Saxon and Roman times, but most famously it is the place that is reputed by some to be “Avalon” of Arthurian legend.
So whether you want some music to your ears or you would like to explore a little further outside and the surrounding area of Bath and visit other historical locations, you really will be spoilt for choice this summer when visiting the county of Somerset.
