The Holy City of Tarn Tara by Pushpitha Wijesinghe
The holy city of the state of Punjab, Amritsar is home to the famous Sikh Gurdwara, the Golden Temple. The city is considered sacred and spiritual and is a major tourist and pilgrimage centre. The famous tourist attractions at Amritsar are Tower of Baba Atal, Thakur Singh Art Gallery, Durgiana Temple, Jallian Wala Bagh which is the sight where the Amritsar massacre took place and the Wagha Border where the main attraction is the changing of guards at the Indo-Pakistan border.
Twenty four kilometers south of Amritsar is Tarn Taran which is another important pilgrimage centre for Sikhs. The area has many Gurdawaras making it a place of special interest and gathering for Sikhs. One of the main shrines in the area is the Darbar Sahib which has on one side a large tank which was made by converting a small natural pond alongside the Delhi Lahore Highway. Story goes to say that halfway during the digging for the construction of this shrine the bricks had been stolen to build to build a Way station / Inn by a local official. This Gurdawara resembles the Golden Temple with the only difference being that it is made out of marble. Goindwal Sahib and Khadur Sahib are a few of the religious places of interest in Tarn Tara. The area was also the centre for Sikh extremist’s militancy during the 1980′s and the early part of the 1990′s. The main occupation of the people in this area is agriculture.
