A Glimpse on Spain’s Music, Flamenco and Its Beginning
Music is a principal kind of art that uses sound as its technique; elements of music are pitch, melody, harmony, tempo and rhythm. Music plays an important part in every culture in all countries; it is utilized for a lot of things, for traditions, entertainment purposes, religious acts, and a lot more.
Spain has a very diverse culture because of its geographical characteristics and because of the many foreign influences that has shaped their culture over the centuries; you can see this in the styles of architectural structures that vary from one era to another, and on the varying techniques in paintings as well as music and dance. Spain’s cultural influences had together with it mostly the Ancient Roman and Greek music and dance forms, although several other influences came and present their identity in Spain’s history such as the Visigoths, Jews, Moors, and the likes. To deeply understand and know more about Spain’s music and culture, you simply must have a trip to Spain and learn its language and the most appropriate technique to do that is by the web and taking advantage of websites like Rocket Spanish which offers lessons in Spanish language and lessons in Spanish culture. Rocket Spanish is a Computer Assisted Language Learning that can help you speak Spanish fluently.
One interesting music and dance form is the Flamenco which was widely assumed to be Spain’s national dance because of the association people have formed of Spanish culture and Flamenco. Flamenco is popularly believed as something that is iconic to Spanish culture; ironically though, Flamenco is a music and dance form that was only known in Andalusia which is one of Spain’s biggest, poorest regions. Most people are not familiar with the fact that Flamenco was not really known as a popular music and dance form before, and a lot of the information found about the Flamenco can be explained by by its troubled history.
Flamenco started from the Andalusian regions and compared to what is believed in this generation, it used to be only famous in the Andalusian regions and nowhere else in Spain. Contrary to popular belief, it is only famous to section in Spain called Andalusia, an autonomous community which is known to be the second largest in terms of land area in the country. Flamenco also stands for Spain’s complex music and diverse practices; however, pinpointing and giving an accurate account of the history of Flamencos remains inconclusive.
Flamenco sprang from the lower levels of society in Andalusia; it was a hard period and a number of people people have prejudgments against Gypsies, which many believe have an influence on the origins of Flamenco. Another study shows that Flamenco is a merging of different gypsy dance tradition and the descendants of Moorish music during the 8th century until the 17th century; also there are experts that believe that aside from gypsy and Moorish influence, Byzantine church music, and the music of India and Egypt played a important part in shaping Flamenco. It’s not a surprise that the historians and government officials of Spain weren’t occupied in recording the minute facts since they viewed the region to be a poor one and the dance form as not worth recording at all. Another essential basis in adding to the difficulty in the study of the origin of Flamenco is that the number of people who danced it were uneducated and did not know how to write so they maintained the music and culture through oral tradition, and to make matters worse they were being persecuted during the Spanish inquisition in 1492.
What’s really remarkable about the Flamenco is that it prevailed through the odds; despite the troubled history that it had, it survived through time. It remains to be famous all over the world until now.
