Through The Years, The Stones Insist On Rolling
Recording starting in the early ’60s, the Rolling Stones have logged many hours in the studio. Their efforts have borne fruit in a plethora of gold and platinum records. Key songwriters Keith Richards and Mick Jagger, no doubt, have had a deep impact on the band’s success. Staying close to the music that united them, the Stones’ records still are heavily reflective of blues, rhythm and blues and old-fashioned rock ‘n’ roll. Even as the rock music landscape has changed over the years, the Stones have remained a constant.
Some of those of the first lineup have been replaced. Besides Jagger and Richards, drummer Charlie Watts is another original member who has remained in the group throughout the decades. Former members include Brian Jones, who departed the Stones in 1969 and died three weeks later, and Bill Wyman, who left the band in the early 1990s. The lineup now includes guitarist Ronnie Wood and bass player Darryl Jones, who is not a full member of the group.
Along with the Beatles, British bands, including the Hollies and the Who, made inroads in the United States. The Stones cultivated a unique identity with their raw, unpolished sound that displayed an affinity for American blues music. Indeed, the Stones idolized such American singers as Chuck Berry, Howlin’ Wolf and B.B. King.
Distinguishing themselves from the Beatles, the Stones projected a staunchly individual image. The Beatles presented an affable if noisy presence that mildly confused parents and pleased young people. The Stones, by contrast, did not smile, even on their record cover photos.
Decca Records agreed to give the Stones a highly unusual contract for a newly signed act, after the company realized its blunder passing on the Beatles. They were paid three times the typical royalties bands pocketed in those days, had full artistic control of their recording and owned the master tapes that they recorded. Before long, Rolling Stones vinyl began selling in the millions and Decca executives were pleased they’d taken the risks that they did.
Decca allowed the Stones to record in any studio that they preferred. While touring the United States for the first time, the Stones taped tracks at Chess studios, where many of their blues idols made records.
If you’re enjoying the Stones on vinyl, you would be remiss not to consider Rega turntables. Like the Stones, Rega is from England. The firm builds high-end turntables and tone arms for exquisite sound reproduction.
You’ll opt to crank up the volume, no doubt, when you’re enjoying the Stones. Enthusiasts should be careful that the music they play isn’t so loud that it causes hearing injury. Be wary of ringing in your ears, which may be a sign of hearing damage, and a signal that you need to turn down the volume.
