How Can The Correct Music Help You To Increase Your Exercise Routine’s Effectiveness?
One of the many benefits of walking as a way to take exercise is the fact that that it requires no specialized equipment. Whilst it isn’t essential, for a great many people, listening to music whilst exercising is something that can make their workout both more enjoyable and more effective.
In fact, the influence of music on athletic performance has been the subject of a number of different studies. A Scientific study performed at John Moores University in Liverpool, UK investigated the effect of listening to music on workout effectiveness.
They varied the tempo of a “workout mix” of songs in order to see what impact this would have upon the workout efficiency of a test group comprising of 12 male subjects. They found that when the tempo was higher, workout effectiveness was also higher – and the subjects also felt that their workout was more enjoyable. It’s good to know that the UK taxpayer’s money is being well spent.
If you have a notion to ramp up the efficiency of your walking workout, there are plenty of sources of information available. Nike has a dedicated blog on the subject of workout music. You can buy workout music CDs and download workout mp3 tracks from Amazon – you can also find special iTunes workout play lists.
A good number of these delve heavily into the science. You can choose a playlist that starts off with a relatively low bpm (beats per minute), then gets faster as you warm up and then reverts to a lower bpm at the end of your workout so that you can cool down.
At the end of the day, there’s no need to get too scientific or to over analyse the situation (assuming that you’re not a professional athlete or trainee Olympian that is). It’s pretty immaterial whether or not you get the number of beats per minute correct. Listening to your favorite sounds as you walk along will help both the miles and the time to pass more quickly.
If you want to push yourself to walk a little bit faster, then a nice up tempo selection might help. Of course, if you would prefer to take it a bit easier and listen to something soothing and relaxing, then that’s great as well. The key thing is to choose music that you like and that will make your walking workout more enjoyable.
One small piece of advice – don’t set the volume so high that you are unable to hear traffic noise and aural warnings if you tend to walk in areas of heavy traffic. Have fun with your walking workout routine- it’s one of the best exercises to lose weight that you can do.
