Radio City Music Hall
Nicknamed the ‘showplace of the nation’, this historic entertainment complex was first opened in 1932 and is still going strong. In its early days it presented feature films from contemporary giants of American film distribution such as RKO, followed by live ‘spectaculars’. After several decades of this format remaining popular, changing regulations and tastes led to a decline. The building was almost given over to office space, but preservation efforts saved it and after temporary closure and renovation it was reopened in 1980. Live shows, concerts and awards ceremonies are held there to this day; the highlight of its programme being the long-running Radio City Christmas Spectacular, featuring the venue’s famous dance team The Rockettes.

Of special interest is its organ, the ‘Mighty Wurlitzer’ – the largest pipe organ ever built for a movie theatre, with 4,410 pipes.
