Slayer Albums And Their Road To Fame
This heavy metal band was started in 1981 in Huntington, California. After releasing 11 Slayer albums, they have been placed among the top trash metal rock bands in the whole world, not just in the United States.
The band is currently composed of Jeff Hanneman (guitar), Tom Araya (vocals), Dave Lombardo (drums), and Kerry King (guitar). During those times they would practice while wearing band merch of the bands that influenced them.
‘Show No Mercy’, released in December of 1983, is the band’s debut album and was released through Metal Blade Records. It has been for its poor recording quality. It sold about 20,000 copies which was Metal Blade Records’ highest selling release. The promote the album, the band went on their first nationwide tour albeit on their own expense. Needless to say, did they not earn much from the tour.
In 1985, the band followed up their initial release with their second album, ‘Hell Awaits’. This time it was financed by Metal Blade Records as opposed to the first album which was made from the pockets of Tom Araya and some money that they borrowed from King’s father. ‘Hell Awaits’, as the name itself suggests, is darker with more Satanic references.
The third of the Slayer albums was the ‘Reign in Blood’ which was released on October 7, 1986. It was their first album that ever reached the Billboard 200. It was also their first, among many, collaboration with Rick Rubin of Def Jam Recordings. It was around this time that the demand for Slayer merch started.
Their next album, ‘South of Heaven’, was quite different from their other albums. It featured a slightly slower tempo, slower than what their fans were used to at that point. This approach did not go well with the critics. But the album did reach Billboard 200 and also got gold certification.
‘Seasons in the Abyss’ was released through American Recordings on October 9, 1990. The album was generally well received by the critics and once again was a Billboard 200 entry for the band.
‘Divine Intervention’ was the sixth album featuring the popular Slayer music and was released on September 27, 1994. It was notable for featuring Paul Bostaph on drums after Dave Lombardo left in the previous album recordings.
Their seventh studio album was the ‘Undisputed Attitude’. It was released on the 28th of May, 1996 and was just a collection of punk songs that they covered. It featured songs from what they considered as their influences such as D.R.I., Minor Threat, and Iggy Pop.
‘Diabolus in Musica’ which means ‘The Devil in Music’, it is considered to be the group’s most experimental work. It was released on June 9, 1998 and featured songs written mostly by Jeff Hanneman.
And coinciding with the terrorist attacks on the 11th of September, 2001 the band released their album titled ‘God Hates Us All’. IT entered the Billboard 200 and also the last album where Paul Bostaph played for them. Lombard once again became their drummer.
‘Christ Illusion’ entered the highest rank they ever did on Billboard 200 which was at 5. The album generally received positive reviews when it was released on August 8, 2006.
‘World Painted Blood’ was the tenth and the most recent of the Slayer albums and was released on November 3, 2009 under American Recordings/Sony Music. The album received positive reviews from the critics and again an entrant for the band to the Billboard 200.
