Where Are You Getting Your Music From These Days? by Richard A. Manfredi
Music sources are more diverse than ever. Some people download, some stream, and some listen to online radio stations.
The radio has not left the airwaves for good, yet, but it’s more present than ever within the colorful encasings of high-speed Internet cables. Internet radio is a bit different from traditional radio, affectionately referred to as “terrestrial radio,” but some online stations exist that are the Siamese twins of the earthly kind. But in both kinds, people are at the mercy of the deejays; they decide what songs, discussions, and anything else that they’d like to bring to the attention of any listener’s willing ears will get “air” time.
But listening to online radio is not the same thing as hearing your favorite country music song on a podcast. Yes, you got the song online, but if you can sing and dance to it while offline, well, it means, darlin’, that you downloaded it, and a download is just not the same as live sound. They are two different ways of listening. If you’ve got an Internet connection, then every time you wander online you’ll find before you almost limitless possibilities for scoring music.
For example, there’s your dear old granny’s weekly emails, which she packs chockfull of songs from the 40s, the online music stores, which don’t always have the song versions you want, and then there’s the places for song streaming. But even these latter ones, which at first glance seem so much like the radio, or even better, are not so like it in the end; song streaming requires that you be a bit more (inter)active. That usually ends up meaning that you can’t just sit back and let the gospel music songs you’re kind of researching play on their own, you have to go about selecting the songs individually or by album — once the track or the album ends you have to select anew. That’s probably fine for research, but what if you’re not listening to Christian music and actually feel like relaxing while the songs play? If that’s the case, make sure you have access to a real online radio station — they like to keep the music playing for you. They don’t mind choosing the songs for you.
