Creating an Early Love for Music   by Toni Broshears

There are so many things expectant mothers do not know. The process of childbirth, what it will feel like to breast feed, how the body will respond to a sleep schedule that is suddenly based around the wants and needs of another. Preparing for this time can be exciting and a little overwhelming. Often, moms-to-be want to know that they are doing everything within their power to make sure that their baby has the best, brightest and and happiest life possible.

One of the simplest and most enjoyable ways a mother can prepare for the birth of her child is by incorporating music into the baby’s life in the womb. Not only is listening to peaceful classics by Mozart or Bach relaxing for the mother, it may do wonders for the child. Some studies have shown that classical music can actually aid in the brain development of a child, while the brain is still forming.

Over the past several years, there has been much talk about whether or not playing music for the baby in the womb can increase mental intelligence. Even though many people believed that this was possible, a study in 1999 proved that it is not possible to raise the intelligence of people (and therefore, a baby in the womb) simply by listening to classical music. Yet, there are still theories that hearing this type of music will require a baby’s brain to work just a little bit harder and advance the neuronal connections in the brain.

In children, brains reach their peak development by the age of three. Picture a young little brain kicked back in a lawn chair, feet up, drinking a glass of lemonade and saying, “Yup. I’m fully grown now.” This doesn’t mean that the brain is incapable of creating new ways to learn and develop if it has to but generally, the brain is going to feel that it really has done its job growing by the time a child reaches the age of three. Once the brain is formed, it will begin relying on the learning techniques it has developed in its oh-so-long shelf life.

Learning this, many parents may plot and scheme, saying, If only there were a way to help its growing process, to maximize that three year time period, I’d do it. Boy, would I do it.

Drumroll, please.

According to Don Campbell, a music teacher and author, “Certainly it (music) can increase the number of neuronal connections in her brain, thereby stimulating her verbal skills…”

Even if listening to music will not guarantee that your child will surpass IQ levels with magical leaps and bounds, music will most certainly challenge the brain of a child. It has been proven many times over that music can inspire creative thoughts and deep emotions in grown-ups. Couple that reality with the imagination of a child and it is simple to see the potential.

Once a baby who has been raised on music within the womb enters the real world, the emotional connection with music will be already ingrained. It will be simple to transition that baby from the act of listening to music to creating music on his own. For babies and toddlers, music can serve as an awesome way to communicate when the words simply are not yet there.

Plus, for a mother-to-be, the opportunity to share a love of music from the beginning is a special one. Listening to music while the baby is still in the womb can help both you and your baby relax, while stimulating those valuable neural transmitters and a future love for music. Take the time to incorporate music into your pregnancy. Once your child enters the world, the musical bond created between the two of you will exist for years to come.
