As A Live Music Enthusiast There Is No Greater Feeling Than Seeing Your Favourite Band Live At A Gig, But Why Do A Lot Of People Get Condemned For Going To Watch Their Favourite Band On A Regular Basis?

As a devoted music fan, I love nothing more than going to experience my favourite bands playing live. In recent times I’ve gone all over the UK to see the bands that I are my favourites, and have even headed over to Ireland and mainland Europe a few times. On a number of occasions, I’ve actually reserved tickets for a complete tour of about ten or twelve dates and had a really fun road trip with a friend to get to them all.

There are a lot of people who tell me that doing such a thing is a bit peculiar, but I generally ask them if they assume it strange that someone would try and see a football team at every game they play, and as we all know, there are many people all round the world who do that. And only a handful of people ask why they do it! To be honest, I don’t honestly care what other people think about it. So many people have hobbies that hold no interest for me, so why should I be criticised for doing something that I enjoy so much?

In any case, when my favourite artist confirms some gigs, the first thing me and my friend do is to look at our diaries and check our bank balances. Money is always the biggest obstacle, as a really good road trip isn’t just about the expense of tickets, but fuel and accommodation costs too. If the tour looks financially viable, then holiday from work needs to be booked. And we do consider that if we are going to a gig straight after finishing work and then drive back home afterwards, anything under two hours driving each way is quite reasonable.

After that it’s all about locating hotels wherever we require them, getting them booked, finding maps of any venues that we don’t already know, and then we’re ready to to rock and roll – literally! As the dates get nearer, the anticipation grows.

I never cease to feel butterflies in my stomach before they walk on stage, and this feeling never decreases despite how many times I go to see them. And before I start ranting on my soapbox about media influenced pop music, it’s wonderful following a proper band, people who write all their own music, are all extremely accomplished musicians and sound incredible live. They don’t have any need to depend on choreographed dance routines, loads of lighting, Laser eye beam effects and firework displays – their music and their personalities are more than enough to keep the punters happy.

But for this band, budgets are tight, so on occasions when we step in and assist them by doing things like running their merchandise stall or taking with us things we know they don’t have with them, it’s good to feel like we’re contributing to their crusade. It’s good to feel useful!

We’d really love for this band to be huge and for all music fans to have heard of them, but worryingly they have a number of fans who would rather they remained a well kept secret so that they continue to play in local venues and can talk to fans after each show. But as I have explained to so many people, small venue concerts don’t pay the mortgage, fund decent tour buses, finance the Laser eye surgery and ankle operation that two of the guys need or most importantly, provide any money to spend on promoting their music.

To go back to something I said earlier, the music business in 2011 is far more interested in making money fast and has little interest in encouraging musicians with potential because they take much longer to make a name for themselves. It’s really sad to think that many outstanding musicians get out of the industry because they cannot survive financially, whilst the music business throws all of its money at the winners of television reality shows, spending millions on their ‘image’ – so that’ll be cosmetic surgery, Laser eye treatment, bookings with stylists, expensive choreographers and almost inevitably the infamous autotune. But, of course, it’s all about the music!

I’m visiting Wembley Arena next week. But I’m going to cheer on the support act. I’ve paid virtually £30 just to see half an hour of amazing music. I definitely won’t bother to stay and listen to the main band, because I’ve endured them at a festival and they really weren’t very good. Thinking of the vastness of Wembley, I expect I’ll wish I’d already had my Laser eye surgery operation as I know that my eyesight has got quite bad, so it’s likely that the money I’ve spent will give me a blurred view of half a dozen moving dots on stage, but it’s still important to me that I am there to support the musicians I love.
