The best clubs in London by Helen Cross
London is known for its thriving nightlife with something to suit every taste: from down and dirty in the East-End to mingling with the royals in Chelsea, London has it covered.
Club de Fromage at the Islington Acadamy is well known in student circles for providing a cheap-by-London-standards night out. As indicated by the name, a night spent here is all about the cheese. Resident DJ Skinny Jim spins ‘love to hate’ classics from the likes of Tiffany and New Kids on the Block whilst punters in fancy dress vie for queue jumps. Club de Fromage has recently made the leap into rock with ‘Hairbrush Heroes’; a new night to be held on the third Friday of every month at the Jazz Cafe in Camden where the music policy will encompass everything from Dad Rock favourite Bruce Springsteen to hair metal kings Whitesnake.
Cafe de Paris (Coventry Street, W1D 6BL) is an altogether more decadent affair; this opulent venue, decorated in gold and red velvet, takes its cue from twenties Berlin cabaret clubs and regularly plays host to burlesque nights from the ‘Wam Bam Club’ as well as hosting a number of fashion related events for companies such as Boujois and Toni and Guy. Celebrities such as Dane Bowers and Sam Cooke have also made recent appearances.
If your idea of a good time runs to mingling with rather more A-list stars then Boujis (43 Thurloe Street London ) is the ultimate destination. Names such as Prince Harry and Lindsey Lohan have been spotted sipping cocktails and dancing to superstar DJs such as Joey Negro in this super exclusive hangout – only the young and beautiful need apply for this venue though as the door policy is notoriously brutal.
For an international, slightly underground feel, head to Favela Chic; a bar/restaurant/club that loves to blur the boundaries and has much coveted free entry between 6pm and 1am. This laid back venue treads the line between Shoreditch cool, Sao Paolo exoticism and Parisian chic serving drinks and food to a cosmopolitan crowd. Highlights include Carnival night with Caipirinhas made from premium Cachaca and ‘Viva le France’: a French themed night that aims to make French rock relevant again.
If you fancy a night of at any of these clubs but want somewhere to sleep it off make sure you check out the top London Hotels. You can also browse London travel guides for more ideas of things to do in the big smoke.
