Review Of The Martin D16GT From A Real Owner by Troy Smith
I bought my Martin D16GT from Guitar Center over three years ago. This was the last year that this model came with a rosewood bridge and fretboard before the integration of the micarta laminate. I was playing for about a year and did not know the first thing about a good guitar only that I needed a new one. I did know about the reputation of Martin guitars and I tested out all of the models that were less than $1300 dollars. I liked the Martin D16GT best.
I do love the tone of this guitar and I think that it is an excellent guitar for strumming. The volume that is produced with aggressive strumming is nice. It is a simple guitar and looks and plays beautifully. I had it set up for perfect playability and it has never failed me. It is one of the best guitars for the price range that does not rely on cosmetics.
It is OK sometimes to go for the fancy stuff and using a set of 12s gives good volume for delicate music. I play my share of jazz and I feel that this guitar is not the best for lead soloing or finger style guitar and is must better suited for rhythm and comping. This is likely due to the arch top style and is unlike the sound of dreadnoughts. I put in a Martin gold plus pickup to boost the volume and the sound is brought out much better. A cutaway would be nice, but you get what you pay for with Martin guitars.
I read a review where someone heard from an experienced shop owner that yellowing around the neck and bridge was a sign that the bridge was coming up. It is apparently due to the underneath bracing. I noticed the same problem on my Martin D16GT. Luckily I had a good luthier where I live. He said that this is due to the dye being extracted from the rosewood and that this is just a cosmetic problem. The problem is caused if the guitar becomes too hot like when left inside of a car. I do not want to say that I am right and his information is wrong, but nothing can take away from the playability and quality of this guitar. It is absolutely fantastic.
This is an excellent guitar for the money. I think it is a great guitar for country, acoustic rock and folk music. The sound is awesome and it looks good to me when I play it.
The Martin D16GT is nothing fancy, but the quality of the tone is great and it is very easy to play. You can use Martin light gauge strings with no volume loss. The mahogany sides and back give this guitar great tone in any type of room. I can only imagine what the volume of this guitar will be like in the future after it ages.
