Ben Darwish & Andrew Oliver: Indie Jazz keyboard stars sit down over coffee – Oregon Music News by Tom D’Antoni

by Tom D’Antoni on November 17, 2009
Andrew Oliver and Ben Darwish…alphabetical by first name…are two of the stars of the explosion of young players with which Portland has been blessed in the past couple of years.
They are both keyboardists and composers, they both lead multiple bands playing a wide spectrum of music, both come from academic backgrounds and they’re both twenty-five year old Portland natives. At this age they are better known than many players twice their age who began playing before these two were born.
At a coffee shop on NE Alberta Street, in their neighborhood, on a brisk (not raining) Saturday afternoon… Before we go there, here are two brand new unreleased tracks from Ben and Andy (couldn’t resist, will avoid hereafter).
Having heard them, here’s what happened over coffee:
Do you hang out together?
AO: We hang out sometimes…
BD:…when we have time…
AO: If we had more time we would hang out more.
BD: We’re never on gigs together, except for that one we did…a two-piano concert a couple of years ago at Hollywood Piano.
AO: We played mostly solos…and then a duo at the end. It was fun…back in the heyday of that series.
How did you find it, playing together?
BD: It was fun. I like playing with other pianists. I just recently did another one with Gordon Lee and Jof Lee and Steve Christopherson and that was really cool but I was shaking in my boots the whole time. Jof Lee is such an encompassing kinda player.
AO: I just did one with that guy I met in Banf. He also plays bombastically and is technically better than me, but it was fun.
What’s the trick to playing with another pianist?
BD: You have to listen.
AO: You have to communicate clearly. If you’re both on the same page, you’re not going to step on each other’s toes. The potential for excessive density is present.
BD: It’s almost harder playing with a guitar. The sonic quality is different from a piano. If there’s two pianos it blends a little easier. A guitar, you can put two of the same chords together and it won’t sound right.
Suppose someone came along and gave you a grant and said, “Go in a room and don’t come out till you’ve written some music together.” What would happen? How would it work?
They both look perplexed.
AO: I have no idea. I’ve never written music with anyone else.
BD: No.
AO: Uhhhh
BD: Uhhhh
AO: Do you have a grant?
BD: I think we could do it.
AO: I don’t even know what instrumentation we’d devise.
BD: I think that would be the first decision.
AO: Then there would be the question of whether we would both be playing or not. Or playing at all. I like the idea of writing something I’m not playing
