A Quick Look on Flamenco and Spain’s Music
Music and Dance are very interesting art forms that mostly go together; each culture has a different tradition of music and dance to contribute to the world. Music has a large area of functions from signaling the start of war to leading a man and a woman into marriage.
Spain has an abundant music and dance culture that truly astounds the world until these days; Spanish music and dance is usually very iconic in the sense that they can be undeniably Spanish in origin because of salient points and features. The Visigoths also came to Spain, after them were the Jews and the Moors; these various influences have amounted to Spain’s diverse musical styles and form. When one get a notion of Spanish music, one cannot help but think about Flamenco because it is, without thinking twice, one of the most famous dance forms that came from Spain. Tracing the origins of Flamenco, you will be led to a difficult time, wherein many people have prejudices against the lower levels of society which are the Gypsies who have a big effect on the origins of Flamenco. Another study shows that Flamenco is a mixture of gypsy dance ritual and the descendants of Moorish music during the 8th century until the 17th century; also there are experts that regard that in addition to gypsy and Moorish influence, Byzantine church music, and the music of India and Egypt played a valuable part in shaping Flamenco. Since Flamenco is being danced by the poor, upper class society and historians did not exert much energy in recording and studying it, thus very little written records can be found about it. Unfortunately, most of the people from the Andalusian regions were of persecuted lineages, they were also mostly lacking in literacy so they had no method on putting into writing their own cultural tradition for posterity; most of the history of Flamenco has been lost and greatly altered because it had only been passed on through oral tradition.
Until today, much of the history of the Flamenco is still unclear. So much so that until today, many people is trying to acquire more information and do this musical and dance form all over the world.
